Willie Park and Andra Kirkaldy both broke David Brown's two round record total for Musselburgh in this year's contest and, after a playoff, Park prevailed. Their record would not be beaten: in 1892 the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers left Musselburgh for their new home at Muirfield and this meant the end of Musselburgh as a championship venue.
