Willie Fernie
St Andrews/Troon
Willie Fernie One of five golfing and clubmaking brothers from St Andrews, William Scott Fernie, born in Market Street on 8 May 1855, won the Open in 1883 and was runner-up four times. He was a professional at Dumfries and Galloway, 1880-1884, Felixstowe 1884-1887, where he married in 1886, and at Troon, where he did most of his clubmaking from 1887 until his death on 24.6.1924.

He learned quickly what it meant to be a professional in the early days, As he describes it, ‘A puckle o’ us lads played a competition. I won a prize. They offered me money. I took it. And that was my first fee as a professional. It was a wee ane. I thought nae mair aboot it until I went into the Royal and Ancient clubhouse. They had heard what I had done and I was told that I had forfeited my right to enter. I had played for money, was a professional, and had better get out’.
