Kro-Flite Patent Applied For Iron
Maker:
A G Spalding & Bros
, London/Edinburgh Date: 1926
This is a forerunner of the Spalding Sweetspot series. The reverse of the head is marked” Spalding Kro –Flite” with the bird device and “Reg US Pat Off” below which I presume covers protection for the logo and the Kro-Flite name. It is also marked Pat Applied For at the top of the head and, as the club closely resembles the Sweet Spot model for which a patent (1,642,462) was granted to W F Reach, and assigned to Spalding, on 13 September 1927, I believe this is the first incarnation of that, probably from 1926. It is also stamped “A G Spalding & Bros” across the centre of the head.
The face has a ray pattern enclosed by decorative bars and, within it, is a circle of dots around a central dot designating the sweet spot.
The purpose of the patent was a set of clubs where the sweet spot was always on the same place on the head and to mark this with a dot. Pretty obvious today but maybe quite hot technology back in the mid-1920s.
The sole is marked “2” and “Made in USA”. Whatever the 2 means (and each manufacturer used their own numbering system at the time) it is not a 2 iron with the shaft length being 33½”. It has a polished burgundy calfskin grip typical of the 1920s, slightly torn in places as the picture shows.
Many collectors like to build complete Spalding sets of their various hickory ranges. This club will also serve you well on the course.
