Reveley trouble wood
Maker:
Herbert "Bert" Reveley
, Sunderland/Hartlepool Date: 1922
This is an interesting and unusual club marked for a professional who served in the so-called ‘Niblick Brigade’ in the First World War.
At first sight it looks like a driver, 41” shaft length and the characteristic ‘slice of pie’, metal, in this case, brass, insert on the sole, characteristic of Scottish drivers. However, it has a lofted face, like a modern 4 or 5 wood, so either was used as a faitway trouble wood or was custome-made for a, perhaps, older golfer who struggled to get elevation on his tee shots.
I have still to establish whether this was a one-off customised club or if Reveley ultimately patented this design.
The head is oversized and stamped “H Reveley Special”. The hickory shaft remains straight and carries what is probably the original black leather grip.
