Carnoustie Gem putter by Gourlay for Brand
Maker: Charles Brand , Carnoustie
Date: 1906

A very Carnoustie club, the head forged by its best-known blacksmith, James Gourlay, and struck with his crescent moon and star cleekmark for one of the town’s most successful clubmakers, Charles Brand. It also has Brand’s crowned lion cleekmark, rampant, I suppose, but always looks to me like he’s dancing, and “C Brand Carnoustie” inscribed within the outer ring of two circles. The reverse of the head is also stamped “Special” in script, “Warranted Hand Forged” and “Putter”.

The face has a lined ray pattern and the head is in the “Gem” putter form, with a concentric back, putting the weight behind the sweetspot, and a broad sole.

The shaft is interesting, starting off rectangular in cross-section and transitioning to circular further down, The hickory shaft is straight and undamaged and fitted with a replacement, aged sheepskin grip.

Price $185.00
