Centre-weighted driver
Maker:
Charles Gibson
, Westward Ho! Date: 1906
Charles Gibson was probably the best clubmaker in England (although he was a Scot from Musselburgh) and this driver dates from around 1906. It has a small persimmon head with “Charles Gibson Maker Westward Ho!” clearly stamped within a double oval on the crown.
The head is protected by a black fibre slip and, in addition to the normal lead backweight has a lead plug inserted in the centre of the head from the sole. Auchterlonie used this weighting around the same time but I am unaware if anyone obtained a patent for the design.
The hickory shaft is straight and has the same double oval maker’sstamp just below the brown hide grip. There is also a letter “G”, probably part of the owner’s initials on the same area of the club.
