Charles Gibson
Westward Ho!
Charles Gibson Born in Inveresk beside the great clubmaking centre of Musselburgh in 1860, Charles Husband Gibson was one of the early Scots to serve as professionals in England, at Westward Ho from 1888 until 1932. Supposedly his horse cleek mark was in recognition of having lived opposite Musselburgh racecourse.

Charles served his time as a joiner and cabinetmaker with his father and uncle before moving to North Berwick as a clubmaker for Tom Dunn when Dunn came to the town as keeper of the green in 1881.

He was a master clubmaker and trained his four sons and a large number of apprentices, many of whom became well known clubmakers around the world. He was given royal patronage when asked to provide three miniature wooden golf clubs for placement in Queen Mary's dolls house at Windsor Castle (Ben Sayers made the irons for the set).

He died unexpectedly on 18 January 1932 and left two daughters and four sons, all of the latter associated with golf
