Left-handed Rangefinder "Speug" mashie
Maker:
Donaldson Manufacturing Company
, Glasgow Date: 1927
A left-handed version of this unusually shaped club from the Donaldson Company. The head has a distinctive rounded boat shape to it and is marked with six enclosed rows of large dots. The reverse of the head has Donaldson's palid pin Rangefinder cleekmark and is stamped "Speug" a Scots word with the English "Sparrow" below, "Reg'd Trade Mark", "Mashie", and "10/100 yards".
As is usually the case with this firm, the shaft is good quality hickory, still straight and stamped "Rangefinder Made in Scotland". The smooth black leather grip with the top of the grip built up into a pronounced "bell end" is typical of the firm and the period. However, there is a nail hole on the shaft just below this so the grip must be a very early replacement.
