Spade mashie niblick from Cleveland
Maker:
Dave Livie
, Lake Geneva/Cleveland Date: 1926
An unusual club; one sees plenty spade mashies but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a spade mashie niblick before. It follows the same pattern with an oversized head, in a mashie rather than a mashie niblick shape, but obviously more lofted than a mashie. Like a modern wedge I imagine it would also be quite handy for getting out of sand.
From Dave Livie, the eldest of four Monifieth brothers who all emigrated to the United States to follow careers in professional golf, the reverse is marked “Dave Livie Cleveland” in oval form with “Shaker Heights GC” through the middle of that. At the toe it is stamped “Spade Mashie Niblick” in caps. The face has an enclosed ray pattern.
The hickory shaft is perfectly straight and has an unusual grip, to the original 1920s black leather grip has been added half a 1930s “aerated” dark burgundy leather one grip thickening the grip at the top considerably.
The club has a very nice feel and is equally suited to course or wall-hanging.
