Large-headed Gibson spade mashie
Maker:
A F Parker
, Cheltenham Date: 1927
The spade mashie is a club with a head larger than the normal mashie. This spade mashie is closer to a spade than to a mashie with a greatly enlarged head. It was made by Gibson of Kinghorn and has the Gibson star on the back of the clubhead. It has the name of the club across the toe and it looks like "The Jonko" in script. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Gibson made a very famous putter called the Jonko but the patent for it was not theirs and the form of this club is very unlike the round-the-corner, mantelpiece clock shape of the putter, Happy to be enlightened on this one. The head is also stamped for the professional selling it "A Parker Cotswold Hills GC" (in an oval) and "Warranted Hand Forged".
The hickory shaft is straight and undamaged and topped with the original burgundy leather grip with decorative 1920s whipping. A very playable club: don't know where the ball will go but almost impossible to miss it with this club!
