Smooth-face cleek
Maker: Unknown , Unknown
Date: 1888

A good example of an early cleek with a 37½" shaft and 4" hosel with the charcteristic narrow face and almost parallel edges and shallow loft. This was the original off the tee or off the grass long iron and this is a good, strong example should you want to try out hickory play. But that long narrow face takes some getting used to so be read for some practice if you are new to 19th century golf.

The head is smooth front and back. The maker's name may have been emoried away on the reverse but it is as likely to have been made by a local blacksmith who never struck his name or mark on it in the first place. The artisan individuality of the club is reinforced by the hand nicking of the hosel where it grips the shaft.

A good straight hickory shaft is topped with a thick built up bull leather grip. It may be the original but I fancy this was originally sheepskin and the stout all weather replacement was added in the 1890s.

Price $230.00
