Left-handed socket-head driver
Maker:
S B Wallace
, Turnberry / Cardross Date: 1917
Although a busy club professional at a village club between Dumbarton and Helensburgh, Wallace's clubmaking training from the Fernies shines through in his small output of clubs, both in the craftsmanship and his choice of wood.
There is a steady demand through this site for playable left-handed woods and this driver fits the bill admirably. The nicely banded persimmon head is stamped "S B Wallace Maker Cardross" wihin an oval on the crown with "Special" (in caps below). It has a red face insert, with five hickory dowels inserted to create the "fancy face" popular at the time. A straight golden hickory shaft is topped with a polished red cowhide grip. A lovely club: handles well and displays well.
