Hawkins metal lofter
Maker:
St Andrew Golf Company
, Glasgow / Dunfermline Date: 1912
The clubhead is made from Hawkins' alloy, one of the early, pre-stainless steel, rustless materials used for clubheads. It is stamped "Never Rust" which may strictly be true in that the covering on the clubhead might not have been ferrous oxide but it wasn't pretty and probably was not doing the head much good. This, therefore, has been removed restoring the head to a bright, heavily scuffed silver colour, suggesting a high nickel content.
The face has a simple enclosed line patter. The reverse has "The St Andrew Golf Co Ltd" in a double circle, "Hawkins", "Never Rust JH", "Lofter" and "Reg'd Stag" with the company's post-1910 stag maker's mark (from ST Andrew Golf). The hickory shaft is straight and carries a thick suede grip, a period replacement, with decorative whipping.
