Palakona 3 iron for Harry Fernie
Maker:
Hardy Brothers
, Alnwick Date: 1925
Palakona, the registered trade name for a hexagonal split cane construction, was devised by Hardy Brothers in Northumberland who also used it on their much-prized fly fishing rods. It had a spell of popularity in the late 1920s and was well regarded as a shaft material although it could not compete on price when steel shafts were introduced.
This is an all-original 3-iron made for Harry J Fernie, one of the golfing dynasty of that name, and son of Willie Fernie, designer of much of Royal Troon. Harry was assistant to his father at Troon before moving to the Northumberland club in 1919. The clubface has an enclosed dot face and the reverse is stamped "Warranted Had Forged", "Harry J Fernie", "Palakona (Reg'd)" (in script). The shaft, just below the grip, is marked, "No 3, Palakona, Reg's Trade Mark, by Hardy Bros, Alnwick, England".
