William T Stephenson
Evesham/Kettering/Newark
William Thomas Stephenson was born in Nottingham in 1882. His last professional post was at Newark GC (from October 1908) and Jackson’s Register has him at Pershore (Evesham) and Kettering also which is correct but there are quite a few other clubs too. This additional information sadly comes from a bankruptcy hearing in 1913.

‘You have been something of a rolling stone!’, queried the Official Receiver …. The debtor admitted that he had been connected with no fewer than seven clubs and had moved from one to another in order to improve his position’. Upward mobility for the working class in those days was clearly frowned upon. So in addition to the three above he was supposedly at Margate, Tunbridge Wells, Oswestry and Bulwell Forest.

A sorry tale, especially of his household furniture on hire purchase almost paid off and then removed by the furnisher with a young wife and two year old child in the house.

In the war he served as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. At least one other baby had come along by then. He was killed 1 July 1916 and buried in the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez.
