Clubmakers Douglas Bert Howell Braemar/Monte Carlo Douglas Bert Howell, born in 1895 or 1896, was the godson of Jack White who taught him to play the game. Douglas's father, Walter, was manager of the Wimbledon Golf Club where Jack White was professional and the family are listed as living in Wimbledon in the 1901 census. Walter moved to become manager at Raynes Park, Douglas became assistant there in 1912. Howell was professional at Braemar in 1914 and had also been a professional at Monte Carlo. Serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry he was killed in action on 24 March 1918 in the Battle of Bapaume in the Picardy offensive and buried in Arras, Faubourg-d'amiens Cemetery.
