![]() Clubmakers B H H Cockburn Le Touquet Although described as 'a Scotsman .... a fine golfer, and one of the best of good fellows' in a review of Le Touquet in the Derbyshire times in 1911, Brian Hylton H Cockburn was, in fact, born in York in 1882. He was playing in amateur club competitions for the City of Newcastle in 1900 and entered the Amateur Championship of 1903 from there. At some point he turned professional and by 1907 he was professional at Le Touquet and had married a Miss Moser in Calais. He played in the French Open of 1910 at La Boulie. The Le Touquet course was lengthened to over 6,000 yards some time after Harry Vardon had established a record of 68 for the old course and Cockburn established a record of 70 for the extended course.. In December 1914 he was 'temporarily appointed' to the post of professional at Frinton-on-Sea to replace W H Webb who was emigrating to the United States. He was there until at least 1920.
