Clubmakers William Davey Newton Green Born in Bungay, Suffolk, 11 March 1890, the son of Samuel and Jessie Davey, William Davey, may have started his golfing career as an assistant to Ashley Davey (so far as I can tell, no relation) at Thanet but we know, for sure, he became professional at Newton Green in 1910. He is listed as a 'greensman' at the golf course in the 1911 census with his brother, Arthur a labourer there. He served as a Scout with the BEF as part of the 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment and was wounded in action on 25 August 1915 subsequently dying from his wounds on 18 September. Buried in the Gunners Farm Military Cemetery, Belgium, he left a widow, Sybil. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
