![]() Clubmakers Ernest Lewis Newtown/Aberystwyth Ernest Lewis was an assistant to W G Groves at Ilfracombe and took up his first professional post at Newtown in Monmouthshire returning to play a tournament in Ilfracombe in 1911 in which he broke both the 9 and 18 hole record. He was professional at Aberystwyth by, at the latest, 1913 and played an exhibition match there with James Braid against Harry Vardon and George Gadd. In that year he was fourth in the Welsh professional championship, 'bad luck alone standing between him and the championship’ according to the local press. The onset of the First World War led him to enlist and Professor Edwards, addressing the AGM in 1915 noted the ‘professional had joined the forces’ and sounded quite glad it kept their costs down. He served as a Lance-Corporal with the 9th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers and died in France on 29 July 1918.
