Clubmakers James Herd St Andrews/Chicago Jim Herd was a brother of Open Champion Sandy Herd, Bob Herd, David Herd and US Open Champion Fred Herd. Having served an apprenticeship with David Anderson & Sons it was with Fred he came to Chicago in 1897 and, like his brother, was professional at the Washington Park club there. He did much to promote golf in the mid-western USA and retired as senior professional at the South Shore CC in Chicago in 1946. James Herd died in Chicago in 1948, aged 79. While at South Shore he established a clubmaking firm, Herd and Herd, with his son, James L Herd and, later, his nephew, Bruce. As late as 1931 it was reported that this was one of the few firms still producing hand-made hickory clubs and apparently prospering from it. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
