Clubmakers R W Finch Chelmsford Robert W Finch had been an assistant to James Braid at Romford before taking up his first professional post at the now defunct nine-hole Galleywood course in 1909 from where he played in the qualifying rounds for the Open Championship at Deal that year. Galleywood became the Chelmsford club and moved to its new Widford Park location in 1910 with Finch as professional. Enlisting in 1st Battalion, the Essex Regiment, Lance-Corporal Finch was wounded at the Battle of Monchy-le-Preux and died from his wounds on 17th April 1917. He is buried in the Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun. He left a widow and young family. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
