John Heron
Aberdeen/Worplesdon
One of the great sedge of Herons, which I think is the correct collective noun, golfing in the Aberdeen and Peterhead area in the early twentieth century.

I believe he was the son of George Heron, greenkeeper and professional at Peterhead and elder brother, by a year, of George jnr. George snr’s brother Gilbert, greenkeeper at Murcar also had a son, John, but, given this John played with George snr and George jnr in a club match for Peterhead against Fraserburgh in 1910 I think this where he belongs.

However, it was to Murcar he went, as an assistant to Duncan McNicol around 1911 and, from there he played in the Cruden Bay tournament of 1911 and the Scottish Professional Championship of 1912.

In 1913 another Aberden golfer, W L Ritchie took him south to be his assistant at Worplesdon. Heron succedded him as professional in 1922 and remained in post at least until 1949 when he was the photographic model illustrating the shots in G M Bottome’s book, Modern Golf.
