Thomas Anderson
North Berwick/Montclair
Thomas Anderson Thomas Anderson was the father of four-time US Open Champion Willie Anderson. Thomas began his golfing career as assistant greenkeeper at the West Links in North Berwick before supposedly taking up appointments at Kilspindie and Braid Hills in Edinburgh in the 1880s although it is unclear in what capacity as both these clubs only opened in 1899, the year Anderson returned to become head greenkeeper at North Berwick. Certainly golf was played over the Kilspindie links long before the formation of Luffness Golf Club and the same may be true of Braid Hills before its purchase by Edinburgh Council.

Tom Anderson was responsible for the extension of the North Berwick course in 1895.

In 1900, in the company of his younger son, also Tom, and a Nortb Berwick caddy who went on to have a great playing record in the US Open, Jack Hobens, he went to the United States. His wife and four daughters remained in Scotland.

After Willie left the Montclair, NJ, club, Thomas took over as professional remaining in post until his death in 1913. Son, Tom, was his assistant in 1909-10 and, in turn, took over as professional from 1913 until 1915.

Tom, Tom Jnr and Willie, who won, all played in the US Open at Baltusrol in 1903.
