A successful amateur golfer in Carnoustie, James Boyle served his clubmaking apprenticeship with Robert Simpson in his home town.

Turning professional, he was assistant to David Cobb at Greenock.

In 1925 he went to Canada to be assistant at St Clair before becoming professional at the Little River club in Windsor, Ontario.
