Clubmakers John S Fernie Tyneside John Sinclair Fernie was born in Beith, in Ayrshire, in 1890 and served his apprenticeship as assistant to his father, William, at the Glamorganshire club between 1905 and 1912. He then moved to take up the professional's post at Tyneside. He enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers in WWI and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in January 1918. Later that year he was wounded and spent time in a Liverpool hospital with shrapnel wounds After the war he returned to the Tyneside club where he stayed until 1924. In that year he became professional at Old Fold Manor in Barnet, remaining there until the end of his career. He was a frequent golfing partner of the Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII in 1935-6).
