Clubmakers Army & Navy Cooperative Stores London The Army and Navy Store in Victoria started in the 1870s as a mail order business for military personnel overseas and continues to this day although anyone may now shop there. They bought in high quality clubs, notably Forgan's clubs and brass putters from Anderson of Anstruther and started making their own clubs about 1890. Many of these irons and putters seem to have originated in the Anderson forge also. Around the same time their most famous clubmaker joined them, James Braid. He had been encouraged south by their foreman Ralph Smith who, although Canadian born had learned his clubmaking skills with George Forrester in Braid's home town of Elie. The clubs are all of high quality. Their brass putters often have 'exotic' shafts, of greenheart, danga or lemonwood. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
