Clubmakers J R "Johnny" Carstairs Leven A well respected clubmaker who, from the clubs I have seen, and the recollections of his contemporaries, took great care in the aesthetic appearance of the wooden heads he made. He came to Leven Links in the East Neuk of Fife in the mid 1920s setting up in business as a clubmaker (I have advertisements from 1926). He was in his mid 70s when he retired in the 1960s and the business was taken over by Bob Harrison who had started there as an apprentice in 1936. Between the wars the firm had about 12-14 clubmakers producing handmade custom clubs A William Carstairs is listed as a cleekmaker in St Andrews on the 1910 valuation roll and there may be some connection with him.
