William Grieve
Perth
William Grieve came to Perth from his native St Andrews in the first decade of the 20th century and worked for Joe Anderson as a clubmaker.

The first directory listing of him as a maker in Perth is in 1913 at Leith's Buildings on Dunkeld Road between Muirton Place and Ballantine Place. At this time only Joe Anderson was listed as a clubmaker in the town so William was either (a) still working for (maybe Anderson?) (b) working only from home (he was living at 2 Leith Buildings) or (c) a very small business.

During the First World War he served as a signaller sergeant with the Highland Cyclist Battalion and, on demob, worked for te Post Office as a sorter. By 1920 the space at 9 North Port had become vacant. Alex McLeish, a plumber, had occupied it for a number of years but, before that, it had been used for clubmaking by some of the most famous names in Scottish clubmaking: Bennett Lang, William Watt, Robert Simpson and, not quite so famous, Alexander Coltart..

The next year, 1921, Grieve was operating as a clubmaker at 9 North Port. By 1937 his business in North Port was being described as a sports outfitter although he continues being described as a clubmaker until at least 1940. In 1948 he is still shown as living at 13 Ballantine Place but the shop at the North Port is no more.

I am indebted to his grandson, Arnold Paterson, for the following:
'William Evans Grieve was born on 17 May 1878 in St Andrews, Fife and died in Perth on 11 Feb 1949. He was still in business on the date of his death.

I believe that he served his apprenticeship with Robert Forganed. 1912]. He was prominent in the prize lists for the Artisans and Merchants for many years and also played for the Black Watch Association.'
