Clubmakers Tom R Fernie Turnberry Another of the famous Fernie family. Son of Willie, the 1883 Open Champion, Thomas Robert Fernie was born in Troon in 1890 when his father was professional there. His first attachment was to Turnberry (although he had already won the Scottish Professional Championship in both the two previous years), serving there from 1911 to 1926. He won the Scottish Professional Championship again in 1919 and 1920. He was wounded in action in the arm when a corporal with the Glasgow Highlanders in France in WWI in 1915 Later he moved south and was professional at Royal Lytham St Anne's from 1926 to 1950. After he retired as a golf professional he ran a sports outfitter's shop in St Anne's. He died in Blackpool's Victoria hospital on 13 December 1952. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
