Clubmakers Elsie Eva Freemantle Hyères/St Moritz The basis for listing Elsie Eva Fremantle as a golf professional is an interview with her sister Lily in 1911. Lily was at that time an instructor at the Sunningdale Ladies’ Club but decried the notion she was the first professional as her sister had previously been an instructor. They were daughters of William Freemantle and Louisa née Phillips, Elsie Eva being born in Fareham, Hampshire, on 31 December 1886. William was professional at Hyères and St Moritz so she could have been an instructor at either of these clubs. The reason Lily gave for Elsie’s career coming to an end was marriage to Bernard Callaway. This marriage took place on 27 September 1906 so, if her time as an instructor predates this, she may well rival Maud Gordon Robertson as the first female professional in Europe. Elsie Eva Freemantle died in Cannes in 1953. Photograph courtesy Pam Field Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
