J Milne
London
J Milne Born in Montrose in 1868, and a keen member of the Mercantile Club, John Milne was a founder member of the PGA. The Dundee Evening Telegraph reckoned, while still an amateur, that he was,

‘in the very front of Montrose golfers. His iron play is perhaps not so attractive as could be wished but, when on the green, his putting invariably is most effective’.

The same paper reported in 1893 that he had been offered a professional’s post in Nottingham. If he ultimately accepted it, it must have been a short stay as he was the professional at Neasden, in London, from 1894. He remained there until his death in 1921, apparently from Bright's disease (glomerulonephritis)).

He kept in tiouch with Montrose, often back on the golf course there when on holiday and donating prizes, including the Milne gold badge, for competitions at the Mercantile club.
