Clubmakers Robbie Mearns Aberdeen Robbie Mearns was one of Aberdeen’s early professionals/caddies, starting at the Town Links in the early 1870s and moving to Balgownie links (now Royal Aberdeen) in 1888. In fact he, and Andrew Simpson originally inspected the ground for the club at Balgownie to determine its suitability. He played regularly for purses in foursomes with Andrew Annand who was, in most accounts, a more stylish player, notably against the Kirkaldy brothers or in matches against Robert Dow of Montrose. His son Robbie Mearns jnr was an assistant at Balgownie 1908-10 before going to Aboyne. Robbie finally retired from Royal Aberdeen in 1938 after 62 years as a professional. Summing up his contribution a newspaper commented. ‘He knew nothing about the theory of the game and his only advice was ‘hit the bloody ball’. Probably he was the very last of the old school of Scottish professionals who hit the ball low and straight and accurately, and couldn’t put for toffee’.
