Clubmakers John Patrick Leven John Patrick was born in Buckhaven on 19 March 1820 to Alexander Patrick and wife Christian née Malkin (Malcolm). He moved into Leven to become a cabinetmaker and by 1851 was employing four men in his own business. At that time he was living in Branch Street with wife, Agnes(s), daughters Agnes and Christiana, and first born son Alexander . By 1861 his trade was described as ‘cabinet maker and golf club maker’ and a further three sons and a daughter had been added to the family including John Malcolm born in 1851. As early as 1856 he was advertising clubs with an announcement in the Fifeshire Journal. J. Patrick, Clubmaker, Leven, grateful for encouragement hitherto received, and desirous to promote Golfing, is able to supply those wishing to amuse themselves at their own Clubs with best HICCORY (sic) HANDLES on Moderate Terms. All orders from a distance carefully attended to. Leven, 28 April 1856. High praise came from another local paper a couple of years later, ‘a resident club-maker of great merit, namely, Patrick. This club-maker has an exceedingly good idea of how to fit a player, and finishes his clubs in a style that reminds us of poor old Hugh Philp.’ He died in the fourth cholera pandemic of the 19th century in 1866 and the business passed to son, Alexander.
