Fred Lawson
Flint, MI
Fred Reid Lawson, born in 1887, was the son of a Carnoustie greenkeeper and brother of Jimmy and Herbert who also had golfing careers in the United States. He served a clubmaking apprenticeship with Charles Brand.

He went to the United States in 1920 arriving in NYC on the Saxonia on April His stated destination was a friend in Bethlehem, PA, but he soon made his way to Flint, MI, where brother Jimmy was pro at the Country Club. He became professional at the
Mott Park club in the city and remained there for ten years. He made the short hop to the Swartz Creek club in 1935 and remained until his retirement in 1953.

Clearly he was well appreciated by the membership. He had not been back to Carnoustie since his departure in 1920. The club held a “Fred Lawson Appreciation Day” with a golf tournament and pipe bands playing. They presented Fred, and wife Betty, with tickets to go back to Carnoustie in July 1953 for a holiday and to take in the Open Championship. As it turned out, Fred, whose health had been failing, had an operation then but the couple made the trip in August. It was the first and last trip home. His illness was incurable and he died in Flint in October 1954.
