William Nisbet
St Abbs
Born in Gifford in 1891, William Nisbet had a very short career as a professional golfer. He had started following in his father’s footsteps as a gardener and was so recorded on the 1911 census, living with father and sister in North Berwick.

Of the coastal towns and villages, St Abbs and Coldingham was slow to lay out a golf course despite the stunning scenery and its old course had fallen into disuse. However, land was gifted for the purpose of a new course in 1912, a bazaar to raise funds for a clubhouse held the following year and, certainly in 1914, Nisbet was the professional and greenkeeper. A snippet from the Berwickshire News of 17 November records, ‘Playing round with Mr Jas French, William Nisbet the professional, did the round of 9 holes in 35 which is a record’.

William resigned in 1915 as he intended to enlist and he was promised his job back when he returned from the war. As a private in the 1st/8th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) he died on 4 March 1917 from wounds received in action and is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery expansion.
