Clubmakers A E Robb Lelant/Eastbourne Albert Edward Robb was born in Carnoustie in 1875. He began his professional career at the short-lived (1892-1907) West London club of Chiswick, starting there in 1897 or 1898. At the beginning of July 1900 Robb’s appointment as professional to the West Cornwall club at Lelant was announced and he brought his nephew, Gilbert Robb as his assistant. He is supposed to have taught Jim Barnes, the émigré Cornishman and 1925 Open Champion who was a caddy and apprentice clubmaker at Lelant at the time. He moved to (Royal) Eastbourne in 1902 again taking Gilbert with him and remained here for 16 years. Sometime after this he returned to Angus: I have no record of him accepting another appointment as professional. However, in 1926 and 1927 he was instructor at David Low’s golf school in Dundee, the advertisements making much of his experience at Eastbourne and the connection with Jim Barnes. He died in Carnoustie in 1937. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
