Clubmakers James Milligan Gullane/Wilkes-Barre Milligan was a joiner (carpenter) with J & R Hay but emigrated to the USA in 1911 to become professional at the Wyoming Valley CC in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He made an excellent start as a playing professional at the Shawnee Open in Pennsylvania in 1912. This was the first large open tournament sponsored by private capital with a purse of $500. It included Alex Smith, twice US Open champion, the current champion, Johnny McDermott, US amateur champion Jerry Travers, Jock Hutchison, and Fred McLeod. The top eight were on the dancefloor. McLeod and Gil Nicholls sealing the top two positions and Milligan finishing third. However, one after the other, his three brothers back home were killed in the war so he shut up shop to go back to look after his mother in Gullane who had no one left. However he ended up in the HLI (his military records show he started with the Royal Scots) and was killed. Private 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (s/n 40065), killed 11.4.1917, commemorated Bay 8, Arras Memorial.
