Gibson Gem for Army and Navy Stores
Maker: William Gibson , Kinghorn
Date: 1900

A very elegant ladies' gem putter made by William Gibson, apparently for the Army and Navy Stores in London. Apparently, because much of the head stamping has been emoried away but the shaft is stamped "A & N C S L" (Army and Navy Cooperative Stores Ltd) and, below the replacement suede grip, beside the original woollen listing is their shaft model mark, "U".

The Gem was probably first made by George Forrester in Elie but the main producers were Gibson and Nicoll of Leven. This being a ladies' club, with the head slightly smalller, the shallow face is empahsised (1" across at its deepest). The smoothly rounded concentric back concentrates weight behind the sweetspot. The face is smooth with two lines engraved to emphasise the sweetspot. In addition to the small, early pre-Kinghorn star cleekmark of Gibson on the reverse, there is an "L" for Ladies', "Special" and one letter, perhaps the "W" of a "Wm Gibson" in signature.

The thin hickory shaft has the typical dark staining found on A&N clubs. It is very slightly bowed.

Price $240.00
