Smooth-faced diamond back lofter
Maker:
James Anderson
, Anstruther Date: 1903
Although the markings on this club are faint it is still an attractive piece of craftsmanship. The face is smooth and the back is in a diamond pattern, a form perhaps invented by, and certainly popularised by, this Anstruther firm. It bears the Anderson arrow cleekmark, "Special" and part of "Hand Forged". The faint outline of the double circle Anderson maker's mark can also be seen.
A very solid and straight hickory shaft for a lofting iron, a crack has been repaired in the lower shaft as is evidenced by a solid band of whipping around 9" long. It has served its purpose as the club is still playable. The black all-weather grip is either original or an early replacement.
