W Binnie
Kinghorn
W Binnie William Binnie was born in Kinghorn, Fife in 1876, a son of John, a mariner, and his sife, Annie. He was the pro at Kinghorn Thistle club from 1901-1906 and Kinghorn Club from 1906-1912, sharing his time at the latter with being the pro and clubmaker at Burntisland from 1908.

During this time he was committed to the Fife District Asylum in 1903 but seems to have been able to put this behind him.

It is reported he went out to Egypt around 1910 to design a new course at Heliopolis (perhaps there was some connection with James L Hastie.

Binnie was a fine player: winner of the Dunlop Cup, three successive qualifications for the ‘News of the World’ final stages, second in the Scottish Professional Championship and an internationalist.

He emigrated to South Africa in 1912, becoming the professional at Potchefstroom. He beat George Fotheringham, ex-Carnoustie, five times South African Open Champion and the pro at Durban in an exhibition match. His stay in the Highveld was short: he died the following year. He contracted double pneumonia just after returning from finishing second in the championship of the Transvaal behind Mr Prentice, the former Musselburgh amateur, and died in Klerksdorp hospital.
