John Hunter
Prestwick
John Hunter was the son of Charles Hunter, and was born in Prestwick in 1871 during his father's second stint as keeper of the greens there. (He was first hired as Tom Morris's successor but had a short spell down south at Royal Blackheath in the 1860s). John learned his clubmaking skills as an apprentice in the Tom Morris shop. He returned to Prestwick in 1893 and joined his father in his club and ballmaking business. Some clubs they produced are marked "C & J Hunter" while other just have the name of one individual.
