ZoZo gunmetal mallet putter
Maker:
James Anderson
, Anstruther Date: 1904
A ZoZo putter, unmarked, or the stamping has worn off, but the style is unmistakable.
This gunmetal, mallet model was first made by Anderson of Anstruther in 1904 (many for Army & Navy Stores in London) so it is to Anderson I have ascribed it though possibly other makers later copied it). The key feature is a steel face inlay which was claimed to be the best solution for hitting the then new rubber-cored balls (see the advert in the entry for Anderson in the Maker section).
This has been reshafted at some time and, although the head is tight to the shaft, the hickory shaft just looks a little odd being a tad narrow for the short hosel which was also a key part of the design. Nothing wrong with it, it just leaves me feeling that, had I done it, I would have hoped to have done a better job. It is topped with a black leather grip, in keeping with what would have been the original shaft.
Usable on the course. That is, if you don’t subscribe, to John L Low’s comments of 1903 that there is ‘something particularly loathsome about a gun metal putter, it is hard to say what it is’! I am very partial to them; other than the ones made for public parks, they are very collectable and are very eye-catching hung on a wall. An excellent golfing gift.
