Anderson driver for Newcastle
Maker:
David Anderson and Sons
, St Andrews Date: 1914
A small-headed golden (the close-up of the crown gives the best idea of the colour) persimmon driver from around the time of the First World War and made by the famous St Andrews family firm of David Anderson & Son. Their mark is clearly stamped on the head inside an oval. Below this is the name of the reseller, Lambert, with Tyne visible so presumably Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I have no record of a professional or reseller by this name but I will persevere in searching.
The sole is protected by a sorn slip secured by three hickory dowels and, from the wear, it has clearly done its job. The small lead backweight results in a fairly light head.
The hickory shaft has a very slight bend and is topped with what was once a black leather grip now worn down to the nap.
