Brassie with unusual face insert
Maker: J W Moore , Harwich/Redhill
Date: 1912

J W Moore had a reputation as a fine clubmaker, training with the best, and this brassie is a good example. The hickory shaft is still absolutely straight and the polished black calfskin grip, like new, is possibly the original.

The persimmon head is marked “J Moore Special” in oval form and has an interesting leather insert on the face. I have never seen one like this, shaped as an arch, so I presume it is part of the design rather than a later repair, a thought strengthened by the fact that it goes down level with the sole meaning there is no horn slip nor was there ever. If it is a design feature I do not know if it was patented or with what magical hitting powers it was meant to endow the club.

The traditional brass soleplate, secured by six screws, has taken very little damage over the years.

Price $195.00
