Unmarked lofting iron

This early club would be an excellent choice either to display on a wall or to use in 19th century hickory competitions.
A lofter with a fine straight hickory shaft, the length of a modern 4-iron (38"), it has a large head, 3.75” across and 1.75” deep at the toe with a 4.75” hosel. It is smooth-faced, as all iron clubs of the period were and the reverse of the head has no markings. These may have worm away but it is more likely it was never stamped: many of the makers of the time were blacksmiths who did not stamp the horseshoes they made so would never have thought to add their name to a golf club.
The club has a sheepskin grip in excellent condition yet may be the original and dark woolen underlisting can be seen from the top of the shaft.
