Ladies' iron for A Hedges, North Surrey
Maker:
F H Ayres
, London Date: 1923
A ladies' iron made by the Ayres company for Albert Hedges when he was professional at the long defunct North Surrey GC at Norbury (see Makers' Section),.
It has a nice patina (not quite apparent from the bright light it was photographed in), requiring very little restoration but still displaying very clear markings on the reverse of the head. These are the Ayres Maltese cross cleekmark surrounded by “Warranted Hand Forged”, “L” (for Ladies’), “Iron”, “A2” (the model number) and “A Hedges” (in signature), “N Surrey GC Norbury Special”.
The face has an enclosed dot pattern.
The hickory has a very slight backward bow (the way it should bend if the shaft is fitted correctly with the grain and meaning it can still be played) and has the original black all-weather grip.
Price $105.00 Reference: LIR411
