Antique Golf Clubs from Scotland
Catalogue
McKenzie scareneck spoon
Maker: Jordan Marsh , Boston
Date: 1898

I have assigned this club to the Jordan Marsh department store in Boston as it was selling “McKenzie” clubs between 1897 and 1902 and there were no professionals of this name active in the USA at the time (at least so far as I can identify and, sharing the same name, I have a vested interest.) Unfortunately I have never seen a club from them, nor another like this, so I cannot be certain.

The company’s advertising material says the McKenzie clubs were persimmon and designed by ‘experienced Scotch golfers’. This example looks very similar to clubs made by BGI, even the style of rhe stamp whuch has McKenzie in an oval fringed by a scroll decoration. The sole has a fibre slup secured by three hickory dowels.

The shaft, connected to the head with a scareneck join, is hickory and has a slight longitudinal bend. The worn leather grip and the thin woollen listing beneath are complete and probably the originals.

Price $340.00
