William Winton "Miracle" wooden putter
Maker:
William Winton
, Montrose / London Date: 1907
An interesting and rare wooden putter from Winton. I lived in the Montrose area for a good few years so saw a lot of Winton clubs but never this although I suspect it was made by William Winton during his time as a club professional in London and before he took over his brother’s business in Montrose.
Socket-headed, it copies the transitional putter head shape of the 1890s, a fashion which came back repeatedly over a 40 year period. It has a very light lead backweight with three lead plugs inserted. This is because the weight is contributed by a lead insert in the face which, in addition to the mass it adds to the head, would supposedly add ‘feel’ to putting. The downside to that, of course, is that lead will pick up all sorts of little bumps over time leaving a less than smooth area to come in contact with the ball. There is a brass soleplate secured by six screws.
The crown is marked “W Winton Miracle” in caps and picked out in the original gold paint.
The dark-stained hickory shaft is original and straight and carries the, also probably original, black all-weather grip.
