Fernie scare-neck putter
Maker:
Willie Fernie
, St Andrews/Troon Date: 1900
Not only an excellent golfer, Open Championship winner in 1883 and four times runner-up, Willie Fernie was a clubmaker of the highest quality.
This mallet-headed persimmon putter is from his time at Troon, around the turn of the twentieth century.
Harking back to the methods of the previous century the head is connected to the shaft with a scare. The neat lead backweight is secured by a pair of pins, rather unusual, in addition to whatever support is in the cavity. A ram’s horn slip protects the finely lined face and is secured by three hickory dowels.
The hickory shaft is straight and topped with original gide grip with thin cloth underlisting.
A elightful display club which can still pay its dues on the course.
