Nicoll mashie niblick for Gordon Lockhart
Maker:
Gordon Lockhart
, Gleneagles Date: 1929
A mashie niblick from Nicoll of Leven with the famous “hand of friendship” cleekmark on the reverse of the head made for Gordon Lockhart, professional at Gleneagles, the conceptual home of the Ryder Cup with the competition in which Lockhart himself played in 1921, and then the real thing in 2014.
In addition the Nicoll cleekmark, the reverse of the head is marked “Hand Forged in Scotland”, “Mashie Niblick” and “Gordon Lockhart Gleneagles” within an oval. The face is an enclosed ray pattern.
The hickory shaft is straight and undamaged and has one of the patent “bobble” grips of the end of the 1920s, start of the 1930s, in place, interesting to look at, horrible to hold. The white stripe visible in the photograph probably bore the name of this particular patent but has worn away although the grip itself is in excellent condition.
